Let me see a show of hand who knows exactly what goals they want to accomplish in 2019! Put both hands up if you have a plan for achieving your goals! YEAH!
What do you mean you don’t know what goals to set? You don’t already have the whole year planned out day by day!?
I get it, you want to start 2019 off on a strong foot, but, it’s hard to find a starting point when you don’t even know what direction you’re going.
Luckily, in your situation, figuring out what you want to do isn’t important right now. What’s really important is figuring out what you don’t want to do. Yes, you read that right. I want you to figure out what not to do, what you hate doing, and decide to stop doing it.
Last year at the start of 2018 I had a job that I hated. I had been working as a waitress for the last 3 years and I was over it,
I made the decision that in 2018 I would not work in customer services, I would not work weekends, and I would have holidays off. I set a goal for 2018 to quit waitressing. By January 22, 2018, I found a new job and I stopped doing what I didn’t want to do.
It was easy because I knew exactly what I didn’t want to do. Knowing all of the things that I didn’t want to do helped me to figure out how to identify more of what I wanted and motivated me to actually go out and get it.
If you have no idea what to focus on in 2019 focus on what you don’t want to do. As Amy Porterfield (AKA my fav podcaster) says “if it’s not a hell yes, then it’s a hell no!”. In 2019 I want you to form a similar mantra. Before saying “yes” think about what you want and what you don’t want.
How to start deciding out what you don’t want
Evaluate your situation
Think about what is working and not working in your life right now. Make sure to consider everything.
In 2017 I felt like I had a lot of things fighting against me. I had no money, I put 4-years into a relationship that was ending, and I had no idea what I was going to do with my life as a fresh new college grad. When 2018 came around I really felt like I was starting a new chapter in my life. I made a commitment to leave all of that baggage in 2017 where it belonged. I decided that I didn’t want what wasn’t working for me.
Just making this simple decision I saw the shift in my life. By the end of 2018 I was able to; build a savings account I’m proud of, quit waitressing, find myself in a very happy relationship, and realize the direction I want my life to go in. All because I started to decide out what wasn’t serving me and refused to accept it.
Write down what you refuse to do in 2019
Start by making a solid list of what you refuse to accept in 2019. Put your foot down and say “NO”
If you need some inspiration here are a few examples from my list this year:
•I will not let anyone get the better of me or get under my skin
•I will not work on things that aren’t propelling me in the direction I want to go
•I will not let other people opinions stop me from doing what makes me happy
•What will you refuse in 2019? Make a list of 10 things.
Think about all the benefits of cutting these things out
When I quit waitressing I didn’t have to pull doubles four-times a week anymore which gave me more time to spend with my dog and write for my blog (my two favorite things). Plus, with all the Saturdays I had off I got to go on more weekend adventures with my boyfriend
What will you have if you stop doing the things that aren’t serving you? More free time? Less stress? feel closer to achieving your goals?
Make the decision to stop doing whatever is on your list
You haven’t fully committed yet, this is the part where I want you to make the decision. The definition of a decision is to cut off all other possibilities. So cut them off, cut them out, there is no if, and’s, or buts, just stop. Promise yourself right now that you will make the commitment to stop doing what isn’t serving you in 2019.
There ya go now that’s a decision.
