Who here hates mornings? #metoo. I always hated mornings. I was never an early riser. I have always had jobs that kept me up late at night so even the thought of getting up before 9 was like nooo way. Then I started to realize that the most successful people wake up at 5:00 am every day. I am always trying to study and learn about successful entrepreneurs and all of them say the same thing, that they wake up really early. I started to investigate what the benefits of waking up early are, and here’s what I found.
Morning people are more proactive
A study done by Harvard Business explains that people who wake up early in the morning prepare for their day better, they anticipate problems more often so they are more readily prepared to find solutions. Being more proactive can equate to being more successful. When we plan things we have more clarity about what we want and are more likely to accomplish tasks and goals. That is why proactivity is associated with higher job performance, more success, and better wages.
Fewer Distractions in the Morning
If you get up early you are amongst the few that do. You get the benefit of starting your day with no noise and no distraction. It makes it easier to focus. Imagine starting off your morning with complete serenity. No loud children, no one needs anything from you yet, it is your time to yourself to listen to your thoughts. You don’t have this distraction-free atmosphere any other time of the day so you can get way more things accomplished. It is easier to think clearly and be creative in the morning so it is my ideal time to write.
Peak productivity means peak performance
When you get up you are at your most productive because you haven’t experienced any draining or negative energy yet. That is wholly different in the evening. Have you ever gone to work and at the start of your day you plan all of the things you want to do after work? Then you get home and you don’t do any of the things you set out to do! What happened? You got drained from work, you got tired and lazy. Instead of doing laundry or going to the gym you sat on the couch with a bag of potato chips. If you plan to do these things in the morning you are way more likely to actually do them and put in your full effort. I find that so many successful entrepreneurs are up before 7 am. Most of them are even up before 6 am. They don’t give a reason why usually but as Tim Armstrong says, “Life is too exciting to sleep”
More Positivity = Happier you
A study done in 2012 shows a connection between positive attitudes in young adults and waking up early. The study shows that those who wake up early compared to those who sleep in later are more positive, more upbeat, and have more energy. I think the positivity comes from waking up early and having a routine to start the day. When you wake up early and have time for your morning rituals whatever that may be it feels good. It is your time to do what you want. I like to wake up have a cup of coffee, take my dog for a nice walk, have some breakfast, or do whatever I feel like doing (I’m not great at sticking to a routine). If I get up early enough I will spend some time writing. I love writing early in the morning because I feel like I am much more focused and the words just come to me more easily. Writing in the morning and having my coffee puts me in the mood to enjoy my day and start it on a positive note.
I do think that waking up early heavily correlates to being successful because to be successful you have to really dedicate yourself to something. To wake up early you have to be passionate and excited. Remember that feeling the first day of school as a kid when you woke up early and were so excited to go back for the first day. Imagine that feeling every day you wake up. It is so much easier to commit yourself to something that you are inspired about. When you have an absolute unwavering passion for something and you can’t wait to wake up in the morning and get to work. I guess what I’m saying is it’s not the fact of waking up early that makes a person successful, but more so the personality trait of people who wake up early. These people are excited about life, they are excited about what they’re doing, and they cannot wait to wake up and start their day.
