5 Things That Are Making Me Happy Right Now

When most of us think about happiness we imagine the bigger picture, the future. We think “I’ll be happy when I get that raise, buy that new car, take that vacation”. These things come and go and we start chasing after the next big thing. There isn’t anything wrong with having goals and wanting to have a fulfilled life, but happiness will always elude you if all you focus on is reaching these big moments. If your thinking that this will give you long-term happiness think again. What will give you long-term happiness is looking at being happy on a micro level. The everyday little occurrences that make life a little sweeter.

I want to share with you the 5 things that are making me happy right now so that you can examine your life and think about the little things that make you happy too.

1. Sweet little rewards

All last week I was very mindful of the foods I was eating and how much. I didn’t indulge or make excuses for why I deserved a treat. I stuck to my rules, passed on sweets, and ate small portions. Not even did I waiver when a bag full of bagels and cream cheese was brought to the office. When there were cookies (my ultimate weakness) set down right in front of me I ignored my craving.

So when Sunday rolled around I thought I deserved a small reward. I also had a craving for something sweet that I hadn’t given into all week.

So I decided to treat myself to a couple spoonfuls of a coffee cinnamon mug cake and pistachio caramel ice cream. I didn’t feel bad about it because I didn’t overindulge. Plus, the satisfaction I got from my tiny indulgence spilled over into the next day when I reminisced about it to my coworkers.

2. Libby

For those wondering what Libby is, it’s my library app where I download free books and audiobooks. I am absolutely obsessed with it. Right now I’m listening to “The Magic of Thinking Big” and I’m reading “The Happiness Advantage”. I have on hold “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” and “You Are A Badass”. I love that everything is free and there are no limits to how many books I can download at once. This app is one of my few guilty pleasures. I cannot get enough.

3. Brunches with Bae

I love brunch for a couple reasons; 1: breakfast is the best meal of the day, and 2: bloody marys are one of the best reasons (strike that) the only good reason to get up at 7 am on a Sunday. Since Kurt(Bae) and I have decided that going out for food needs to be a fun rarity and not a regular occurrence, Sunday brunches have been that much better.

We used to go out to eat all the time and it was rare to actually have a home cooked meal. It’s funny because eating out all the time actually takes the fun out of going to restaurants. We went out for Brunch this Sunday and because it felt more like something special and less like something routine we were able to really enjoy being there.

4. Long walks with Ares

I don’t always like walking Ares, in fact, I would go as far as to say that it usually feels like a chore. Except when we go on long, blissful walks through the woods or down to the lake. That’s when I feel like I can breathe easier and walk slower. It’s like life stops for a little bit and I don’t have to focus on the 20 things that I have to get done or the chores I’ve been putting off. I get some of that free-spirited Ares energy and I just relax for a little while.


5. That first cup of coffee in the AM

Nothing beats that first cup. It’s warm hazelnut goodness. I am totally coffee obsessed as you may know from reading “Confessions of A Coffee Addict”. One of life’s little blisses is having coffee in the morning.


Let me just set the scene for you. It’s 6:30 in the morning, no one is awake yet. The morning air is cool and crisp. The sun is peeking through the trees and starting to warm up the earth. There I am, sitting on my porch, enjoying the morning, drinking my coffee. What a reason to be happy!

See, it’s important to find happiness in a cup of coffee, or in a good book. We have to savor the small things. The less we go looking for happiness and just going about our day being happy the more we find that it alights upon us.

  1. First of all I would like to say wonderful blog! I had a quick question which I’d like
    to ask if you do not mind. I was curious to find out how you center yourself and clear your mind
    prior to writing. I’ve had a difficult time clearing my
    mind in getting my thoughts out. I truly do enjoy writing but it just seems
    like the first 10 to 15 minutes tend to be lost just trying to figure out how to begin. Any
    recommendations or hints? Many thanks!

    1. Hi Rosalind, that definitely happens to me sometimes as well! What helps me is to come up with an idea and then write an outline first. That way when I go back to write the article I already know what my focus will be. I hope this helps!
